Common Insect Pests
Aphids – Also called plant lice. Sometimes these are compared to small ants as a form of description. Usually light green in color, but sometimes purple to black, depending on strain and food source. One sign of these is the appearance of sticky spots on the leaves or on the floor beneath the plant. A black filmy mold may develop on the sticky spots. Usually found on tender new growth.
Fungus Gnats – Fruit fly-like in appearance and flight. This insect lives most of its life as a tiny worm in the soil. These are an annoyance but cause little harm to a healthy plant. They eat decaying organic matter in the soil (or rotting roots in over-watered plants).
Mealy Bugs – These often appear as small cottony-looking spots at the intersection of a leaf and the plant stem. When immature they are pinkish-white ovals with a waxy protective coating.
Scale – Mature scale appear on the stems or on the underside of leaves often in masses piled upon each other. They look similar to a fish scale and are usually brown in color. You may see sticky spots on the leaves or on the floor under the plant.
Spider Mites – Very tiny mites that will infest most any plant with ivies as their favorite target. In most cases you will notice the damage first before ever seeing the pest. Damage appears as a mottling or an uneven yellowing of the leaves. They live on the underside of the leaves and occasionally will form a web.
