Poinsettias Year-Round
 |
| Purchasing a beautiful poinsettia for the holidays?
Here are a few tips for keeping your plant picture perfect for months to come! You can even regrow you plant for next year by following a few plant rules:
- During the holidays place your poinsettia near a sunny window or well lighted area.
- Do not let the plant touch cold window panes & stay away from cold drafts however, the cooler you keep your plant at night (55 to 60 degrees) the longer your plant will stay in bloom!
- Water thoroughly discarding excess water and apply a soluble fertilizer once a month.
- Late winter months should notice side shoots developing below the bracts and grow up above the old flowering stem. Cut back the original stem of the poinsettia 4-6 inches in height removing the old flower. This will cause the buds located in the uppermost leaf axils to grow and develop. Usually this is done in February or early march. Keep the plant in a sunny window at a temperature between 60-70 degrees and water and fertilize as needed. After the danger of spring frost is past and night temperatures exceed 50 degrees, sink the poinsettia in the ground (in the pot) in a well drained, slightly shaded location.
- Before the first frost in mid september, take your plant inside and place in a sunny window as before.
- Important! In order to flower your poinsettia, you must keep the plant in complete darkness between 5pm and 8am daily until color begins to show in the bracts (almost mid december) temperatures should remain, again, between 60 - 70 degrees. This should allow your poinsettia the chance to flower again in time for christmas!! Good luck!
Foot note: Keep your pets safe from potentially hazardous plant consumption during the holidays. While the poinsettia is not recognized as lethal to your pet, they are often treated and sprayed with insecticides, which with a gross amount of ingestion could cause severe reaction or possible poisoning to your pet. So please take precautions, be responsible and keep that furry family member safe and healthy!
